Bog Oak is a term for native timber that has been buried in bogs for several millennia, (not to be confused with petrified wood). Due to its antiquity and limited supply, it is a desirable material. It polishes very easily to a rich lustre, it will crack through heat and time. These sub fossil timbers are generally seen, as intractable survivors of vast stretches of geological and paleo – botanical time.

History of Oak and Bogwood

About ten thousand years ago, the last of the ice fields retreated from Britain leaving behind a land upon which lichen, then birch and willow slowly began to grow. After a lapse of some thousand years a thick, mixed forest of pine, yew and oak formed a blanket over most of the country. These great forests lasted over four and a half thousand years before gradually being outgrown by vigorous growth of peat forming plants. This marked the beginning of the bogs, which have grown to a depth of some ten metres over the past three to four thousand years, preserving the once great wood it covered.

Radiocarbon dating Queens University at Belfast confirms; “In providing dates along with sculptured wood, you can safely say, in the case of bog yew, that the growth of the wood is between 2,000 and 2,200 BC and for Bog Oak, the date of growth of the wood is between 3,300 and 3,600 BC” Dr. F. G. McCormack, Radiocarbon Research Unit. You are buying a unique piece of part fossilized wooden Bog Oak It is a natural product, there are no two pieces the same. It will dry out and crack in time, this will be accelerated for pieces which are on show in central heated buildings. To preserve the lustre, simply wipe over with Linseed oil.

As each piece of bog oak is unique, delivery will be assessed on purchase, for the most competitive price according to the dimensions and weight. We will discuss this with you prior to completion of sale
